Argument

The following appeared in an announcement issued by the publisher of The
Mercury, a weekly newspaper.
“Since a competing lower-priced newspaper, The Bugle, was started five years
ago, The Mercury’s circulation has declined by 10,000 readers. The best way to
get more people to read The Mercury is to reduce its price below that of The
Argument 21
Bugle, at least until circulation increases to former levels. The increased
circulation of The Mercury will attract more businesses to buy advertising space
in the paper.”
Discuss how well reasoned... etc.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In this argument the author states that , the low priced magazine bugle had attributed to the decline of circulation of mercury magazine. so the author suggests that the price of mercury magazine has to be brought down which will help to reinstate its sales and also in turn contributes to the increase in business through advertising spaces. However, the recommendations advanced in the report are questionable for two reasons.
First, The circulation of a magazine is directly attributed to the cost, which is a false anology when considered in the broader perspective. The sales of a magazine depends on various other contents like current afffairs, polictical neutrality, sports and show biz. Apart from this, the readers play a major role in the success of magazines. In America, Play boy magazine sells as much copies as a business magazine do. Going by cost factor, playboy magazine is costlier than anyother business magazine. This clearly exemplifies that cost is not a deciding factor in the sales of a magazine.
Second, The strategy suggested for improving sales is to reduce the cost of the magazine as low as bugle's. This could be most hampering decision for mercury as they have not taken the overall cost of manufacturing and delivering the product to the end customer. Also they have not mentioned the loss incurred with this new strategy over the cost incurred in running the magazine. They assume that reduced cost may increase circulation and attract more business, which is again not clearly explained with facts.
In conclusion, this is a weak argument. To strenghten the recommendation , the author would have to explain not only that price is the only factor that determines the sales of the magazine but also the direct relation between the circulation and business through advertisements. As the author fails to communicate his strategy with additional facts, this theory can be ruled out.

ISSUE: TV and Radio

“In some countries, television and radio programs are carefully censored for offensive language and behavior. In other countries, there is little or no censorship.”
In your view, to what extent should government or any other group be able to censor television or radio programs?
Explain, giving relevant reasons and/or examples to support your position.

--

In this argument, the author gives an unfounded analogy on control over censorship of television and radio content. Before getting into the analysis of whether the government\group able to control the censorship, we have to analysis the necessities of it. Based on the necessities the conclusion can be drawn.

Turning first to the anecdotal reference, the author has not given the details of the countries that have these systems in place and what are all the effects. Does this system reduce any crime related to offensive language and behavior? Is there any supporting evidence for the same? No. The author’s statement is inconclusive and is not supported by vital proofs. So this gives us a prime concern on why to censor the contents?

Even if the author gives supporting evidences, then also we have other questions like, is television and radio are the only media to propagate obscenity. There are other mediums like movie, advertisement hoardings and internet which also reaches the people in the same way as television and radio do. Apart from these mediums, the environment and living also contributes the effect on human being. This conclusion is well supported by thesis and real experiments. So the author has not mentioned the amount of contribution of violence through TV and radio. So this again raises the question, why to censor only television and Radio?

Finally, even if all the above queries are answered, we still have doubts on the extent of government or group on control over the censor. How will the government or a group decide the parameters of the program? In few Middle West countries, in the name of censorship, they cut down any program that speaks against government. The people may be denied to know what’s happening in the country. Apart from all these things, Television and radios are predominantly available resource in houses. The control over the viewing is not only dependent on the broadcasters but also by the people in the family. They also have significant role in controlling the contents. They have remote control with them and they can always have an option of changing channels. So, people based on their conscience can also avoid unwanted contents if they really want to. So based on the above analysis, the government or group really can’t control the censorship of television or radio content unless they clearly have the plan. If there are enough evidences for the disturbances of established order through television and radio, then they can control the contents else it’s not the best way to do so.

Madurai !!!!!

Back to Madurai. I came here for some rest and for my dear friend nirmal's marriage. At home, mornings go swiftly without doing anything and afternoons go unawarely sleeping. so, evenings are the only lively time to catch up with friends and to have some bizarre encounters with people. I met Arun today and we were having chat at our top(top - place for get-together by utterly useless people) .

Our main discussion was on prakash, elder bro of one of our friend, who's is unique in many ways. The best thing abt him is his survival nature, amidst all situations he always got something to say. We were sharing couple of interesting incidents. i have stated few below:

1) On his marriage: he was sitting in front of AC in his bridegroom room in the mandap. all his friends(surprisingly it's us...though he's 4 yrs elder to us, all he got as friends are us !!!!) went out for a fag. he also wanted to join, so he came out of is room with no one noticing him. the moment he came for cigar...Deepan shouted from his stomach: "Ponnu thapichuduchu...maapla odi poitaan" The next sec, prakash was running 100 mt dash and rushing to his room !!!!!! we were laughing like mad.

2) The other day, he was arguing for couple of hours on "Karizma got 3 cylinders !!!!!"

3) Same day, he and Arun went out for a fag. One shopkeeper approached them for selling zippo lighter. Prakash asked "how much?", shoppe replied "Rs.1500". Prakash turned back to Arun and asked, "dei, konjam change kudu". Arun reached his pocket and pulled 30 bucks...Prakash with a sarcastic smile "dei, change a 1500 kettenda !!!!!" Arun fainted.

4) He became father last week. we asked him "Payanukku enna peru vaikalaamnu irukinga????" Prakash after 2 mins of deep thought replied "athu, veetla konjam tamil pera irukanumnu sonnanga, athanaala, ryan gopalsaamy nu vaikalaamnu iruken !!!" we yelled "ennadhu ??????" prakash "nalla illiya???? appadinna galicula goplasaamy....g for g rhyminga irukulla" ....mudiala saamy !!!!!!

Dreams are meant to be pursued...

What is a dream? For me, there are two types of dreams. First, it comes when u r asleep and the good thing is that u wont remember completely when u woke up. This quality makes it feel better than the other one, also u don’t have to chase behind it which u donno completely. Second type, comes when u r in all ur senses. It's a burning desire and it creates an urge to achieve and gives a great pain when u fail.

The first type of dreams have lots of scientific reasons, it's related to ur subconscious mind and some reflections of your day-to-day life. These dreams are just fantasy stuff, I had many such dreams. Like, once I was threatened by a 20 feet snake which was chasing me in all corners of the world. I had dreams of flying snakes, fast driven cars, destruction, tsunami, natural calamities. All are disturbing dreams, also sometimes, I had pleasant dreams. A green field, I was lying down, I saw a white horse, a beautiful girl riding with a very big hat. She stared at me and then smiled, I got up and started chasing her, and then I caught her and kissed her. It is the best dream I ever had. These dreams have nothing related to my life. It’s all mirages. After each of these dreams, I don’t remember most, but gives either couple of disturbing hours or pleasant hours. But right now I am not getting any of those dreams.

The second type of dreams comes from various inspirations of life. When we are kids, we get inspired by he-man, Spiderman, Batman, nevertheless…our own Shaktiman. Childhood dreams are fantasies, I wish I could fly, I wish I could fight; I wish I could travel to next galaxy, and lots I wished. It takes several years to realize the ground realities. After grown up a bit, I even laughed out at my earlier dreams. Then I had different set of dreams, one important thing is to get “First Rank”, which is highly un-achievable by any means!!!! I was just an average student, so that dream got shattered. I got miserable marks when I joined new school; I was frightened , I don’t felt the loss of my dreams. From then onwards, it was like hit n miss of all my dreams. I achieved few and lost many.

Despite all the pros and cons, dreams are something which keeps the spark alive. It’s dreams which is inspiring to run the show. I still have the list of shattered dreams; I am still counting on them. I will reach them at least once in my lifetime, but also, I can clearly say there is one dream which will never be achieved. I have no worries for that, coz life has to move on….a very important person wrote this is in my slam-book. Dated 8 yrs ago: “Dreams are meant to be pursued, so never give up and you will definitely achieve it one day” My pursuit of knowing this person more will never be achieved, but these words keep me alive and inspires for more dreams !!!!!

Kuselan - ippave kanna kattude !!!!!!!

Thalaivar, delivering speech from his heart at the school function, speaks about the highness of friendship with deep rooted words and makes everyone to turn back a moment in their life about their past friends. It's an excellent scene in the movie. He speaks about how inspiring a friend could be in your life. he has even re-phrased matha-pitha-guru-theivam to matha-pitha-guru-nalla nanban-theivam, which will echo in the heart for longtime. Thalaivar's performance in this scene is really awesome and we can see the talented actor hidden. The top angle cameras are good at many places.
hmmmmmmmm, i thought of writing positive about the movie, but then what to do ?????????? such a beautifull story and this !@#!@#!@ director Vaasu, screwed it to such an extent that i lost my control. mavane, avana mattum nerla paathen...dariyal thaaan !!!!!!! This clearly shows that Vaasu is brainless and pathetic. he's one more idiot who thinks that he can run the movie just by having thalaivars presence....I was so irritated by this movie.
The story is simple, a poor barber, friend of thalaivar, split many years ago and they re-unite. Doesnt it seems so convincing, watch it on screen to see urself how menace it could be. Pasupathi, plays the role of a barber, excellent performance and carries the movie on his shoulders. he got a bit of sarcastic touch amidst all his troubles. It's really good to see someone smiling even in trouble. his wife, meena also supports pasupathi and leaves an impression on us. the three kids are lovely. that's it...then we got thalaivar.
Vadivelu, at one of his worst performance, irritates us whenever he comes on-screen. Santhaanam is better than vadivelu. Comedies sucks big time. Then comes the other departments, Music, screenplay, dialogues, photography, editing...everything. Except for photography, all the other stuffs are below average. The encounter with Sundarrajan is one piece of cake to leave an lasting impression on us, but alas, the counters given by thalaivar are not convincing and doesnt impact us much. This is one place where dialogue writer can score a big shot, he missed.
Overall, it was supposed to be an inspiring movie but failed to impress anyone. When i came out of theatre, i had headache as if i watched anyother vijay\ajith movies.Sari vidunga....athaan decemberla SULTAN the warrior varaarula.....appo paathukalaam !!!!
