Padikathavan: Review

After Villu fiasco, i went for this movie yesterday. Again the expectations are as less as possible.It turned out to be a good entertainer till first half and second half was gross.
Dhanush did a good job and his comedy sense is really good and expression are too good. In Tamil,among heroes, i like prabhudeva when it comes to comedy and after that its dhanush who can really make us laugh with his gestures and expressions.

There's nothing big in the movie to discuss apart from few twists which are not that much twisted. The comedy stands out in this movie and it's done really well by dhanush and Vivek. Except, they should have edited\shredded the vivek-bathing-in-heroine-costume comedy..it's awful and irritating.

Overall, a decent masala movie with all its elements. Looks like dhanush identified his plus and minus and giving a sheer entertainer. It's all the way Dhanush who's carrying the movie in his shoulders and he does it well !!!!

Weekend sin - Villu

Well, it all started with my roomie Shanm who pushed me to watch VILLU. I always have some preset mind when watching this type of movie and thats leave-your-brain-at-home, but still watching this movie gave me real heart-attack and other illness including vomit with the obscenity and dysentery with the action scenes.

There's nothing much-to-tell about the story, as it revolves around the one-man-who-can-save-everyone. Normally This spoilt brat uses superstar name in every movie and he tries to establish as next super star...but in this movie he took the path of MGR..believe me, MGR would have committed suicide if he was alive...same holds good for bharathiyar also.

The intro scene was one hell shot seen in the recent times...I think the whole team is not out of KURUVI impact...and he continues the legacy in this movie also yes he fly across a street to save an "attu" figuru !!!! and then as usual an intro song. Then he travels to village meets nayan n vadivelu and some shitty\crappy comedies...except for "rendu mulam idly". Nayan's as usual role with less-dress was as usual awkward. heard that she's the highest paid actress and to retain that she's reducing the dress as much as possible and sometimes its so scary....

Nayan, pls get little less salary n use little more clothes. If she's wearing such bizarre costume for songs, fine, we can forgive....but showing everything in all the scenes is little too much. even the front benchers used to get fed-up with this skin show....

Now back to story as second half travels to Munich with hell lots of goons showing some godfather stuffs !!!! then vijay meets them and some absolutely non-sense fight sequence and songs and what not !!!!! they used one famous dialogue from"good bad ugly" and insulted that dialogue to the core by vijay delivering that with a constipated look and throat cancer voice...then as usual there'll be bombs which-wont-hurt-hero, air fight, water fight and everything..in sum-up ,again an useless movie from him.

Vijay looks like an AIDS patient in this movie. We all know that he can dance gracefully, fight elegantly but he failed once again to choose a little convincing script. all this larger than life wont fit even our Superstar...so vijay better come down to earth or soon you'll join the league of Vijaykanth or JK Ritheesh !!!!!

well is there anything good to talk abt the movie..why not, in the interval they showed SARVAM trailer, looks promising(atleast the trailer)...when i came out of theatre , villu's intro song was lingering in my mind "raama kitta villa kettan, bheema kitta kathaiya ketten"....in frustration i told..."dei, unkitta naanga romba naala oru nalla padam kekkuromda !!!!"

Ghajini - review

I watched it last week, but didn't get time to express my thoughts !!!!!

Well, it's a well made remake of tamil version without altering the essence. The climax was trimmed well and it's a neatly made movie in recent times. Few good points:

1) Aamir...well, its all the way Aamir. It's his grandiose show...be it a businessman role or STML patient, he fills the screen and he cornered Asin in performance !!!!!

2) Asin, definitely her career best and all she got to do is speak in hindi...again an excellent performance !!!!

3) ARR at his song. Nobody can stop him, the re-recording for hitting scene was far better than tamil version. Also songs and re-recording all the way was astounding !!!!!!!

4) Photography...ravi K chandran scores full marks just for one n only song..."Guzarishhhhh". It touches ur heart !!!!!

5) Details. As Aamir being a perfectionist took lots of care in continuity and details. In the hindi version, he used to hang the Polaroid Cam in his right shoulders...as he's lefty.(in Tamil it will be hanging on his left shoulder !!!!).

So it's complete paisa vasoool movie. a full package meals...!!!! WATCH IT !!!!

Abhiyum Naanum :(

A very ordinary movie...told in an ordinary way...with ordinary performance....summed with ordinary music\visuals...and few..very few extra-ordinary dialogues !!!!!

The movie is like a stream, it starts...it flows and it continues. Dont enter the theatre with the impression of "Mozhi" rada mohan....this is yet another creation from "Ponniyin selvan" rada mohan !!!!! the basic elements like sarcastic comedies and detailed characters are there...but still it fails to impress beyond a point.

Everything in the movie is very much predictable and as a whole the plot fails !!!!!There are lot more issues while discussing the father-daughter relationship. Rada mohan played safe from start to end. He's a very good creator when it comes to human emotions, so i thought he will discuss some serious issues...but nothing like that happened till the end..Maybe he's not that good\bold as Bala or Ameer !!!!!

Watch the movie, but definitely don't expect "Mozhi" from this movie....This is a very ordinary movie.

PS: sometimes, ordinary can become extra-ordinary !!!!!

13 Tzameti

Yesterday night, after watching the ICL clash, i tuned to UTV world movies. It's an excellent channel which gives a wide variety of foreign language movies. The movie @ 11:00 pm for yesterday is 13 Tzameti.

This is a Spanish thriller directed by Gela Babluani and protagonist role performed by George Babluani(brothers !!!!)I have never seen such a mind-blowing film in recent times. It's literally mind-blowing. I lost sleep for 2 hours and it gave me immense fear. The movie is based on a group of rich perverts who put other people life's in stake for their own eternal pleasure. The performance of all the characters is simply outstanding. The fear they exhibit through their eyes is just more than brilliance.

Well, a little into the story, a young carpenter, sebastian, unable to control his urge about a secret job which can fetch him a fortune of money sets his journey to the house of death. The rich perverts of French community gambles during the weekend. The gamble is based on Russian roulette game. In simple terms, 13 people will stand in circle with their guns facing the opponents and have to fire when the lights turn on. They will be given 1 bullet in round one and the bullets count keeps on increasing till the last round. Well, our sebastian, unknowingly gets into this trap and now there's no going back and he has to play it out. The mental chaos he undergoes in this events form the rest of the story. I was not very sure about the story and nearly my heart pounded out when i came to know abt the game-plot, from there on it's a roller coaster ride. The fear completely surmounted me and it started sweating @ 12:00 am in bangalore cold !!!!

One disturbing thing about this movie is that, this can't be a complete fictional, it can happen somewhere in the world. The success of this picture is the narration style of this movie from the point of view of the persons who are playing this game. Even though the protagonist took the mainstream of performance, all the other 12 characters depicts their emotions via their eyes.....and it's terrifying !!!!

For a change, if you guys want to know how death will be or the moments before death..watch this movie. If not you'll get fear of death atleast you'll get respect for all lives around !!!!

The whole movie is made in Black&White and in broad daylight. The music is just amazing, camera is simple and efficient in capturing emotions(no bizarre angles, almost still shots). The editing is slow but the screenplay is too gripping that you'll feel the cold nerves !!!!

PS: this is purely my personal opinion...
PPS: watch it once and if it doesn't gives u fear, be happy that you are very much gifted in life !!!!

Vaaranam Aaiyiram - the better title is Yaanai Thousand or Elephant Aayiram !!!!

Vaaranam Aaiyiram..mixed opinions, though its definitely not a master piece , can be watched once for few things:

(STATUTORY WARNING: few spoilers are there)

1) The excellent love track between Surya and Sameera. It starts like an usual Love-At-First-Sight (eventhough I don’t believe that, but sameera va paatha yaara irundaalum they’ll fall in love) and ends up as an eternal love. The scene where he tried to convince her to stay back in India was just awesome. The whole track keeps the movie live for first half.
2) Anjalai song: Fate separates the lovers and this song comes after that. Surya got an intrinsic way of showing few things, like when he first meet sameera he used to keep his hands on heart and try to stop the extra-poundings. During this song, which portrays the pathos side has been churned out well with dance movements like he will hit his heart with the same hands to show the pain…
3) Surya’s acting has improved a lot and this is definitely his career best. Excellent performance from him and he has shown that thin margin btw son and dad. He’s definitely an inspirational dad!!!!
4) Sameera: wow, she’s absolutely fantastic. No skin shows, just expressions, the glimpse she gives when she meet surya in US is simply outstanding…it disturbed my sleep for some hours ;)
5) Technical department: Technical department is simply outstanding. It’s really refreshing to see the visuals and in particular; songs and fights. The fights during the rescue of the child are so natural and “adiyae kolluthey” is best for its choreography and picturization.

I hope 5 reasons are more than enough to watch a movie…now to bloopers.

1) The movie name is derived from aandal thirupaavai, an excellent rendition on lord perumal. That’s the only time u see something in pure tamil, for rest of the movie even the paper boy will use standard idioms. So B & C centres la padam kandippa puttukum. There’s a scene in which divya tells surya, “you look like million bucks!!!” My roomie: “dei, iva ippo ennada sonna????”
2) Length!!!!! well, though surya-sameera part is an interesting one, but the length really made us tired and everyone were expecting an interval to peee(athisayamaa PVR la nethu AC fulla irunduchu, the moment interval title card came, everyone were running out) In second half after surya getting married, the movie runs for another 30 odd mins...sathiyama ukaara mudiyala!!!!!!
3) Slow!!!!! When the movie ended we felt like stayed in theatre for some months!!!! Though the movie is slow, none of the things are detailed. The whole story is in narrative manner, so if it’s little more detailed, it would had been a great pleasure to watch
4) Re-Recording…a big letdown!!! Songs are really good but harris re-recording was pathetic to the core. I always had a doubt whether this guy is an "aathivaasi", and he proved that once again with his cruel re-recording. Wish I had a remote to mute few scenes!!!!!
5) Father-Son relationship was portrayed bit larger than life and it’s not acceptable at times.

Avlothaan pa….this is purely my personal opinion. One more spoiler alert, people who follow mass heroes pls avoid this movie!!!!!!!!

Kuselan - ippave kanna kattude !!!!!!!

Thalaivar, delivering speech from his heart at the school function, speaks about the highness of friendship with deep rooted words and makes everyone to turn back a moment in their life about their past friends. It's an excellent scene in the movie. He speaks about how inspiring a friend could be in your life. he has even re-phrased matha-pitha-guru-theivam to matha-pitha-guru-nalla nanban-theivam, which will echo in the heart for longtime. Thalaivar's performance in this scene is really awesome and we can see the talented actor hidden. The top angle cameras are good at many places.
hmmmmmmmm, i thought of writing positive about the movie, but then what to do ?????????? such a beautifull story and this !@#!@#!@ director Vaasu, screwed it to such an extent that i lost my control. mavane, avana mattum nerla paathen...dariyal thaaan !!!!!!! This clearly shows that Vaasu is brainless and pathetic. he's one more idiot who thinks that he can run the movie just by having thalaivars presence....I was so irritated by this movie.
The story is simple, a poor barber, friend of thalaivar, split many years ago and they re-unite. Doesnt it seems so convincing, watch it on screen to see urself how menace it could be. Pasupathi, plays the role of a barber, excellent performance and carries the movie on his shoulders. he got a bit of sarcastic touch amidst all his troubles. It's really good to see someone smiling even in trouble. his wife, meena also supports pasupathi and leaves an impression on us. the three kids are lovely. that's it...then we got thalaivar.
Vadivelu, at one of his worst performance, irritates us whenever he comes on-screen. Santhaanam is better than vadivelu. Comedies sucks big time. Then comes the other departments, Music, screenplay, dialogues, photography, editing...everything. Except for photography, all the other stuffs are below average. The encounter with Sundarrajan is one piece of cake to leave an lasting impression on us, but alas, the counters given by thalaivar are not convincing and doesnt impact us much. This is one place where dialogue writer can score a big shot, he missed.
Overall, it was supposed to be an inspiring movie but failed to impress anyone. When i came out of theatre, i had headache as if i watched anyother vijay\ajith movies.Sari vidunga....athaan decemberla SULTAN the warrior varaarula.....appo paathukalaam !!!!

The Dark Knight - more than a movie !!!!

Harvey Dent "You either die as a hero or live longer and become a villain." This is the underlying concept of the movie. It standsout of other super hero movies in many ways. It speaks about a man, who destined to be a savior but not always succesful inthe job. The attitude of batman makes him special when compared with other super heroes. He is so strong that he believes that hero is someone who have face. So, he maintains low-profile and promote Harvey. Harvey is an intelligent district attorney who with his brilliance make everyone believes that he can lead the city. Though he is equally inspiring like batman, however he is also suceptible to emotions and becomes a pawn in the hand of Joker. Joker is the villain of the movie,more than a villain, he's chaos. he questions, disturbs and dispruts the basic concepts of beliefs. The belief in the system, the humanity everything, he disturbs. He is one villain who can destroy just by playing with your right and wrong.
The Story is straight. The villain wants to take over the Gotham city, and batman tries to stop him. The story is as simple as any other superhero movies. But Christopher nolan(director:memento,The prestige and Batman begins) narrated it in such a way that it leaves a great inspiration and total change of perception on super heroes. It is surprising to see that batman can also get hurt. It is surprising to see batman can also get emoted. lastly, its surprising to see that batman can also be defeated. The Batman is no different from us, it is our attitube that invokes the super hero in us. The climax is one such example for the mentioned point.
Two ships loaded with gotham city people and detanators in hand to blew the other ship. Joker plays with them by giving them a time limit to decide who's going to press and live. This questions the very concept of faith towards humanity.Ships with 300-400 people each and everyone has their opinion and all of them want to live. Such a chaotic situation and the options are only two. Press the detonator, blew the other ship and you are safe. Throw the detonator away and hope that the other ship people will also do the same. But for oprion B, is there any concrete belief that whether it happens that way? Do you think people in the other ship will throw it away and "hope" that will be followed in the other ship also???? this is the best moment of the movie, watch it urself to believe that why this movie stands out of all other movies. That scene gives great belief on humanity.
Well, as i have said too much about the theme of the movie, let me speak something about the movie as whole. Among all the cast, the clear scorer is Joker, played by Heath Ledger. This is one piece of cake for him to make it big in hollywood and he uses it to the full. The way he plays with the mind is really brutal. The dialogue he delivers are outstanding. Apart from that the body language he exhibit for the character is a special mention here. He's not a strong villain, he is not well built and stuff, but he got brain which is so corrupt and words of venom which turns even a good man like Harvey into a devil. Then comes the character of Harvey Dent, district attorney, played by Aaron Eckhart, who stands up for his people belief and again he turns up the wrong side by jokers influence. This character is the back bone of the story, The batman believes that he is the answer for the city's future. He puts him in front and tries to make him the president of the state. But, some unfortunate events turns him to two-face and against the batman beliefs. An excellent character which is on the same line of darth-wader of star wars. Lastly, The Batman himself,played by Christian Bale, who is more human and believes that hero is someone with face and can give hope to people that "if he can do then i also can do".He fails often, his ethics is not to kill the bad but not to save them. The very concept of his killing is questioned by joker and we can see batman is also-at-times-human by the way he breaks down to pieces.
Again the whole credit goes to Director Chirstopher Nolan for his brillinat screenplay(along with Jonathan Nolan).The soundtrack is splendid that u feel so close to the movie(twerrified),also, this is one of the movie in which the music is there till the end. Kudos to James howard and Hans Zimmer. Photography by Wally Pfister, sets the tone and mood of the film. The pictures are so clear , despite the fact that movie is set in dark background. Special effects???? is there any special effects, i dont think so, the scenes were so natural and believable that it leaves out the slightest trace of the special effects. To mention one special effects in make-up, the two face has been splendidly portrayed. The editing, visuals everything is a treat in this movie.
To summarise, Batman makes us believe in democracy, he makes us believe in humanity, he makes us believe in rules and he makes us believe in ourselves. Watch this movie to get a great experience of your beliefs. As said in the movie: "Batman, is not a super-hero, he is just a savior"
PS: The one and only awkward thing in the movie is heroine catsting. After Kirsten dunst in spider man, Maggie Gyllenhaal, is the worst looking actor on screen. I prefer catie holmes or anna hathaway !!!!!

Dasavatharam - my review

The movie has amazing screenplay. the way he knitted chaos theory to the story is simply mindblowing (but "The butterfly effect" is best). The movie starts with 12th century clashes between shaivite Vs Vaishnavite. That day, no one's aware of atheism, so they started fight in the name of "Who's powerful god ?".
I expected that story will again surround the concept of theism\atheism and the questions followed by that...thankfully it was not that.(this is the reason "Anbae sivam" bombed at box-office). The scene where Nambi starts from his deep throat the mantra "OM" and end it with "Namo Narayanaya..." Awesome piece of narration. dont miss that part !!!

Then story comes to 21st century, group of scientist inventing a bio-weapon which may destroy half the world within mins(little more than KURUVI movie, which takes 3 hrs to kill people). If they invent something, then there should be villain or group of villains who tries to snatch it and take control of world...so same happens here. A cool villain of recent time, Mr.Fletcher, impresses with his stiff body-language. The make-up is not that good. but then it's been annulled by the acting skills. Fletcher is a cool dude.

The bio-weapon which looks like zippo lighter(flip type), comes to India and Govind follows it, here, the intro of Balram Naidu, tamil-speaking-telugu guy comes into picture. The dialogues gives a fresh air about what real comedy is(not like vadivelu n vivek types). Then story takes a turn from there and hero will be chasing the ayal(thats wat they said in the movie) and eventually all the characters will come into the picture without any lag. as i said the screenplay is brilliant.
Finally, the world will be saved and thats it !!!!!

i liked these things:

1) 10 Characters: it's a damn good imagination and Kamal really worked hard to put into the picture, but the make-up man let him down most of the time.The perfect make-up is for Balram Naidu. Rest all are not that impressive, but Kamal compensates all with his immense acting skills.Kalifulla and Poovaragan deserves a special mention here.

2) Sarcasm: Sarcasm at its best. few samples,
Balram Naidu to Govind: Telugu en mother tongue, deputation la tamilnadu vandu tamil kathukittu naane tamil nalla pesuraen, nee tanjore la pirandu...english la thaan pesuviya???? appuram epidi tamil Vaazhum ?
Govind to his love: Kadavul illainu naan sollala....irunda nalla irukumnu thaan solraen !!!!
George Bush to his asscoiates: can we drop an atom bomb to destroy it ?
What is NaCl ?

3) Balram Naidu & Fletcher: Clearly the scorers. Balram with his witty comments and fletcher with his cool attitude. The expression on kamal when he sees a fellow telugu-waadu is simply awesome.(re-recording for this scene is best).

4) Chaos Theory : The way he knitted the concept of chaos theory, and the way he related 12th century with 21st century is awesome. but i am very sure that people wont understand.(the same happened with kudaikul mazhai,which is an awesome portrayal of split personality, but anniyan clicked)

5) Graphics: Though they cant match the hollywood standards, but still they gave their best. Tsunami scene was good one. Rest all the places, we feel like, they could have invested a bit more !!!!

6) Screenplay: Clearly it's masala movie, if u expect something like heavy story line n concept, it'll be a big disappointment for you. it has a very racy screen play and u'll enjoy the movie if you have least expectations.

Negatives:

-1) The extensive usage of languages, kamal being a perfectionist, he tries too much on languages and often people miss what he's trying to convey. the poovaragan char, will speak nellai tamil and it's very pure that even nellai people wont understand !!!!!
-2) The most pathetic Asin - I wished Fetcher should have killed her instead of mallika sherawat........perumaale..mudiyala !!!

Overall, it's paisa-vasool entertainer, go,just enjoy and forget all ur troubles for 3 hrs !!!!

KURUVI - acid test

(There will be lots of sarcasm in this post)

Saturday 2nd May, 2008, went for Kuruvi, first-day-show-symptom. It was a habit in college which continued to stay with me till now, but most of the time the experience has been pathetic. The same happened that day also, the so-called "next superstar" Ilaiyathalapathy Dr.Vijay's KURUVI......just hell !!!!!

Before entering such movies set your parameters clearly, 5 songs,3 fights, some stint of comedy, then bunch of punch dialogues. What more you can expect from Vijay, so my expectations was also limited to these params. but wat i saw was hell damn of a movie !!!!!!

At the start of the movie, there are quiet few "warning messages" regarding smoking,drinking and "dont try this in home" sort of things, they should have added one more slide "It's not too late, even now, you can leave the theatre".

The start of the movie was really good, showing the human slaves abdicated @ cudappah quarry and hero's father crying for his son to save the people. usual one, not too high build-up. but wat followed nex ten mins in the name of introduction was pathetic to the core !!!!

Car race, dont get confuse with F1..this is as local as Vijay :-) everyone are preparing for the race...vivek is in tension...hero has not yet arrived....then someone announce that race will begin in 5 mins...wooooossssssshh.....boossssssshhhh...disssssssssshhhhhhh( Hero entry). He comes out from manhole over a ditch, infact its a right place for him to come out of, then 2 mins punch dialogue abt the DITCH and work ethics(கருமம்டா !!!!). fine, leave this, then he rushes to race field in less than 2 mins and will be ready for the race. everyone will be ready with their car and Vijay will be with something that looks in between auto and mini lorry with a bike's bhp !!!! race starts , vijay will be leading with his so called car(in between few cars will be flying off the field, defying the gravity). At this point, as the director decided to add some comedy...i mean heroism to the scene, (ரூம் போட்டு யோசிப்பாங்களோ ), bumper, bonnet, doors, nut n screw will be flying away from Vijay's car by hitting with other cars. This is something viewable, but then, suddenly his accelerator pedal will be cut and wat happens next made even the core fan of vijay dumbstruck !!!! Vijay picks the accelerator cable and give throttle by holding it in his teeth (வீட்டுக்கு போயீ முதல mech engineering degree certificate தூக்கி குப்பைல போடணும் ) As usual he wins the race and wat next? any guesses????? yes the same....the intro song :-)

After the song, the movie directly enters the story with Vijay travelling to Malasia as "KURUVI" to get back the money from "KOCHA"( வில்லன் பேரு !!!!), that's our SUMAN. he got a "weight" character in this movie, yes, he looks fatter than in SIVAJI.Then fight @ malasia. Tamil people developped a strong belief that a hero can punch a guy and that guy will fly for abt 5-10 ft on all directions(law holds good for danush also), but in KURUVI, whenever Vijay punches someone, they will fall 2 streets far... TOO MUCH !!!!!

Then comes the Heroine introduction, possibly the dumbest girl ever found in recent tamil cinema. Believe, Trisha looks like எப்பிடி இருந்த நான் , இப்பிடி ஆய்ட்டேன் !!!! Pathetic,that too with that skinny costumes she looks like an AIDS patient (ஐயோ பாவம்).

Then Vijay snatches a diamond instead of money from "KOCHA" and then the whole KOCHA family with their LOCHA villains will come India to get the diamond back( இப்பவே கண்ணை கட்டுதே ), all this happens in first half of the movie, before interval there's a fight, which is epitome of stupidity, Vijay does some fights which scared the people in the theatre, i was too scared that someone will come out of the screen and fall at my feet !!!!!! At this point, people started wondering why they kept the name KURUVI for this movie, i hope director also got the same doubt , so he decided to clarify that with a scene...in which Vijay flies from top of a building to a railway track which is nearly 500 mt away from him diagnolly....he catches that train. so it means, VIJAY can fly like KURUVI, so is the name of the movie.(முடியல !!!!) INTERVAL !!!!

Then KOCHA snatches the diamond and put Vijay in a lift and drop him again in the ditch, as Vijay knows the ditch very well, he comes out of it on the other side( logic எல்லாம் கேக்க கூடாது ) then vows that he'll bring his father and the slaves back( அதாங்க first sceneல வந்தாங்களே )What happened for the next 1 hr in the name of rescue was like hell to watch and rest u all go to theatre and give ur try......

Regarding the aspects i expected from the movie:

Songs: except that happy new year song, nothing was qualified to hear, but then after watching trisha on screen...scrap that song also.

Fights: I believe villains will fly even if Vijay farts on them....too much

Dance: he started this new trend from Azhagiya Tamil Magan, to dance few steps which will make audience beleive that only Vijay can do this.

Comedy: third rated comedy with all possible double\triple meaning. but only one comedy was damn good, a person will refer to vijay n vivek and says " தன்மானத்தை விட்டு குடுப்பாங்க ஆனா BIRYANIய விட்டு கொடுக்க மாட்டாங்க "
